So, you’ve chosen the church, found a caterer, bought the wedding dress and sent out the invitations. In just a few short weeks, you’ll be standing before your husband-to-be, family and friends, saying:

“I, take you, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

The promises you make to each other during the wedding ceremony are considered key to guiding the decisions you’ll make throughout your marriage, from building a family life to managing your finances.

Let’s explore how those vows relate to your marital money matters.  What financial promises did you make when you said, “I do”?

1.  “I, take you, to be my husband

Simply put, you both just became business partners…

2.  To have and to hold from this day forward

..for the rest of your lives.

3.  For better or for worse

You’re both responsible for the positive or negative outcomes of 100% of all financial decisions you make.

4. For richer, for poorer

You promise to invest and save money when times are good and reduce spending when times are tight.

5.  In sickness and in health

You promise to be fully insured to cover costs for unexpected health issues or emergencies and to financially secure the lives of you and your family.

6. To love and to cherish,

You promise to make all financial plans and decisions in the spirit of openness and with sincere consideration for each others needs and dreams.

7. From this day forward until death do us part

You promise to operate together as one financial unit, until such time as one of you passes away.

Do whatever it takes to gain a firm understanding of what marriage means to your finances, from budgeting and saving to managing and investing. Have an open dialogue about money matters and create a financial plan before your wedding day.  Consider expert advice on all areas of your money and stay on top of your day to day financial affairs.  Say “I do” to building a firm financial foundation on which to build a loving and prosperous life – together.
