Hispanic female executives

A demographic study of Hispanic executives and leaders chosen for the Top Hispanic Women in Business of 2002 revealed:

The typical respondent is between ages 41 and 50 and has been with her current employer more than 10 years

Nearly one third of respondents (32 percent) attested to having experienced workplace discrimination based on their Hispanic ethnicity

More than half (54 percent) reported discrimination based on gender of the 54 percent that experienced gender discrimination:

78 percent said such discrimination affected their hiring and promotion opportunities

70 percent felt it contributed to pay inequalities

Close to 70 percent of respondents said they have benefited from affirmative action or diversity programs

Latina executives say that moving up the career ladder requires not only working hard and excelling at your job, but advanced networking skills are necessary.

Characteristics of Women Business Owners

Women business owners are prepared to face risk: most (66%) are willing to take above average or substantial risks for business investments.

Women and men business owners have different management styles. Women emphasize relationship building as well as fact gathering and are more likely to consult with experts, employees, and fellow business owners.

Women owners of firms with $1 million or more in revenue are more likely to belong to formal business organizations, associations or networks than other women business owners (81% vs. 61%).

Greater educational attainment usually results in lower unemployment rates: women with less than a high school diploma—9.7 percent; with a high school diploma—4.8 percent; some college, no degree—4.5 percent; and bachelor’s degree and higher—2.4 percent. http://www.dol.gov/wb/stats/main.htm

On June 8th the FDA approved the first-ever vaccine against cancer: Gardasil. In clinical trials Gardasil, manufactured by Merck, has been 100% effective in preventing infection with HPV strains 16 and 18, which together cause 70% of cervical cancer cases. The vaccine is also 99% effective in preventing HPV strains 6 and 11, which together with strains 16 and 18 cause about 90% of genital wart cases. http://womensissues.about.com/

On average, women make 76 cents on the dollar compared to men. The exact amount varies greatly depending on what your profession is and where you live.

In 2004, among all race/ethnicities, American Indian/American Asian had the second highest chlamydia rate (705.8 cases per 100,000 population), which was 4.9 times higher than the rate for whites (143.6 cases per 100,000 population). African-Americans had the highest chlamydia rate (1,209.4 cases per 100,000 population).

African American and Hispanic American/Latina women are more likely to get heart disease because they tend to have more risk factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, high blood pressure, and diabetes than white women. Women of color also are more likely than white women to die of heart disease
